The Battle over the Arabian Peninsula: Saudi Arabia vs the Houthis in Yemen
For over sixty years now, the have-nots of the Arabian Peninsula have been fighting amongst themselves, as well as against the haves residing north of them. Yemen is the poorest Peninsula country, lacking the petroleum which made Saudi Arabia so rich. Some Yemeni tribes have therefore vied for power in the Capital, Sana’a, and beyond. Therefore, when the Saudis helped their neighboring Royals, Nasser’s Egypt stepped in to reinforce the rebels. During the current iteration, Iran is now behind the Houthis, and the Saudis and Central Government are essentially acting for common interests. At issue now is the Houthis’ attacks on shipping in the Bab-el-Mandeb strait, while Iran is focused on its threats in Hormuz. Is the Iran war about to expand to a two-choke point conflict?
