For the last several months, terror activity emanating out of the West Bank and leaking into Israel’ proper generated manhunts and preventive operations by the Israel Defense Forces, leading to clashes with armed individuals and cells, especially in and around the cities of Nablus and Jenin. Further south, East Jerusalem is a hotbed of friction between residents and the police. How tense is the situation in these sectors, what is the Israeli government and security forces policy in handling it and could the sensitive time on the eve of the Parliamentary elections see a conflagration into full-scale raids on the scale of the 2002 Defensive Shield campaign?
