Lebanon's Struggle to Free Itself from Iran's Tentacles

The current administration in Beirut, headed by Christian President Aoun and Sunni Prime Minister Salam, is apparently sincere and relatively courageous in insisting on the dismantling of the Shiite terror militia Hezbollah, which has been holding Lebanon hostage to Iran’s diktat. However, progress is slow, Hezbollah resists all efforts to downgrade its power to that of a political party, and South Lebanon which borders Israel’s Galilee is still a combat zone. As the Beirut policy makers prepare to head to Paris and New York in order to gain support for both the anti-Hezbollah agenda and the formation of a multinational force, should UNIFIL’s mandate not be renewed, the fate of the projected improvement in the Lebanese Israeli relationship hangs in the balance. Are we to expect a breakthrough any time soon?
