The Houthi Threat: Is High-Intensity War Inevitable?
Just recently, Israelis going about their usual daily business were once again jolted out of their schedule by a missile alert siren. This threat, launched from afar and expected to arrive in the following minutes, turned out to be yet another ballistic missile launched by the Yemen-based Houthies, using Iranian weapons and technology. However, the Israeli public is not overly concerned by these missiles, as most of them are either safely intercepted or fail to cross the 2,000 kilometers from launcher to target. Yet strategically it is in fact more than just a nuisance, as the port of Elath is currently on life support because of the Bab-el-Mandeb blockade, and Israel’s Air Force and Navy strikes have not been enough to degrade and deter the obstinate Yemenite tribesmen. So if limited action is not enough, while a ceasefire holds between the Houthies and the United States, is high-intensity war to eradicate the threat inevitable?
